Overview

Honduras is a country in Central America. This country used to be called Spanish Honduras because Belize was named British Honduras. The country is bordered by Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua. The country borders the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.[1] Honduras is just over 112,000 km² and has about 8 million people. That is about one-fourth of the population of the State of California.[2] [3]

Honduras is a country in Central America. It is located between Nicaragua and Guatemala. Here is a Google map of Honduras.[5]


Languages

The official language of Honduras is Spanish. However, many people also speak English.[6] The people in Honduras speak Spanish due to the fact that the Spanish invaded this territory on the way to conquer the Aztecs.

ReligionThe people of Honduras are Christians. In fact, 100% of the people in Honduras are Christians.[7]

Ethical make up of the population

90% of the people in Honduras are a Mestizo mixture of European and Native America. 7% of the population is Native American and 2% is Black. Lastly, 1% of the population is White.[8]

Government

The country of Honduras is a constitutional republic. This type of government is a state, where the head of state must govern according to the constitution. And because the head of state is elected, this is a type of republic.[9]

Economy

The currency used by the people of Honduras is called a Lempira. 1 dollar is the same as 18.92 Lempiras. In other words, 1 Lempira is the same as about 5 cents. [10]

The average per capita income of Honduras is $1,829 in 2009.[11]
  • Industries and exports

Some of the major industries in Honduras are sugar farming, coffee plantations, textiles, clothing, wood products, and producing cigars.[12] Honduras exported $5.2 billion worth of goods. Some of the items that are exported by Honduras include: apparel, auto parts, coffee, shrimp, bananas, palm oil, gold, zinc/lead concentrates, soap/detergents, melons, lobster, pineapple, lumber, sugar, and tobacco/tobacco products.[13]




Famous People

Some of the most famous people who are from Honduras include David Archuleta, who is an actor on the show Ugly Betty. He also was the runner up on the seventh season of American Idol. [14] Other famous Hondurans include: Amado Guevara, Angela Bendeck, Carlos Flores, Eduardo Bahr, Evelio Reyes, Mario Zamora, Ezequiel Padilla Ayestas and many more. [15]



Food






One very popular dish in Honduras is Pollo Sudado. This is a dish that can be translated to Chicken and Potatoes with Tomato Sauce. Below is the recipe.




Ingredients







Serves: 6-8 • 1 whole cut up broiler-fryer chicken
• 5 white medium sized potatoes






• 1/4 cup chopped white onion • 1/4 cup chopped tomato • 1/4 cup chopped green bell pepper • 1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce • 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro • 2 tablespoons chicken bouillon powder • 2 tablespoons cooking oil • water • salt

Directions




Prep Time: 20 mins

Total Time: 1 hr

1.Take off the skin from the chicken, discard and place chicken in a plastic bowl.



2.Quarter the potatoes and also place in bowl with chicken. Add the chicken bullion and mix until all pieces are covered with bullion.
3.In a large cooking pot, add the oil and heat. When oil is heated, add the chopped onions, tomatoes and bell pepper. Saute for about 1 minutes or until translucent.
4.Add the chicken and potatoes to the pot and brown the chicken. About 7 to 10 minutes.
5.Add the tomato sauce and add enough water to cover the chicken. Add the cilantro. Add salt IF NEEDED.
6.Cover and cook for about 30 minute or until potatoes are cooked.
7. Serve with white rice.[16]

Honduras is a country that is very diverse because of the Mayans, the Incans, and the Spanish conquerors. If you are interested by the Mayan ruins that exist in Honduras then you should visit Copan. At Copan there are many immense buildings, hieroglyphics, and sculptures. Copan is located on the western side of Honduras near Guatemala. Another amazing tourist attraction are the Bay Islands of Honduras. These islands are slightly north of mainland Honduras and are located in the Caribbean Sea. On these islands you can snorkel, relax, kayak, dive and more. In fact, the Bay Islands are surrounded by a reef called the Meso American Barrier Reef. This reef is the second largest in the world! The Bay Islands have the best resorts and hotels in Honduras. If you visit Honduras you need to visit Copan and the Bay Islands.[17]

What you should do if you visit Honduras:










  1. Fly in to San Pedro Sula airport near Copan.
  2. Spend the day touring the Mayan ruins.
  3. At around 8pm, fly to Roatan, one of the Bay Islands.
  4. Sleep!
  5. Sunbathe and have fun at the beach.
  6. Go snorkeling at the Meso American Barrier Reef.
  7. Sea-Kayak close to the island shore.
  8. Come back to your hotel.
  9. Sleep!
